OLED vs. AMOLED brightness, usability in daylight??

Postby elf.elf.baby on Sun 30. Nov 2008, 18:43

Hello. IRIVER now has two devices with AMOLED displays, the SPINN and the P20.

Is an AMOLED display as good for using in the sun as a conventional OLED?

Has anybody seen either of these devices in person? Outdoors, on a sunny day?

Thank you.

Hi!

I don´t believe that the brightness of the Amoled is so bright to see everything fine in the sunlight.
But you have following OLED advantages:

Clear, distinct images result from OLED displays’ lifelike color reproduction,
vibrancy, and brightness. Unlike LCDs, OLED screens dispense with intervening
liquid crystal structures that limit color vibrancy off-angle.
Bright, crisp images and video are easy to see from any angle.

OLED screens appear extraordinarily bright because of their unusually high
contrast. Unlike LCDs, they have neither backlights nor chemical shutters that
must open and close. Instead each pixel illuminates like a light bulb.

OLED displays exhibit more than 16 million colors. Camera-class LCDs can typically
reproduce 262,000 colors.

OLED pixels independently turn on and off as fast as any light bulb. Active displays
can refresh at rates more than three times that required for standard video resulting
in more fluid full-motion video.

OLED displays are easier to see in changing ambient light conditions.
In typical image and video applications, OLED displays typically use only 25 percent
of their maximum possible power consumption.
